Advocacy Ideas for Sessions

What issues would you like to see the Leon County Young Democrats support over the next 60 days? Is there a advocacy group that you would like to see us partner with during this session? One of our goals is to help raise awareness on democratic issues and the legislative session is a great time to have a large impact.

I like the idea of conservation/growth management...we could even tie in our own members Thure and Chad who both have a lot information on that subject, maybe even have a panel discussion of sorts..maybe they could recruit some of their associates....a lot of people support the party becuase of our strong enviromental stances in the past.

Conservation/Growth Management would be a good issue to start with. Alan's right that the Democratic party has earned the support of many environmentalists. I would be interested in what Susie Caplowe has to say, and if she would have any guidance to give on the issues currently facing our area.

As the Leon County Young Democrats there are a lot of important environmental issues we could become involved in, such as Total Maximum Daily Limits, proposed changes to the downtown greenspace, and the demand for affordable housing. Ms. Caplowe might have a broader perspective on environmental issues, but her insights would still be interesting to hear.

An important question I would like to ask and may be appropriate to consider as we weigh different ideas in this thread: as a local political group what goal(s) will we try to achieve through advocacy during the session?

I agree with Conservation/Growth Management as well.

However, there are other issues such as Education and Tuition increases that may effect Young people more or at least get their attentions more and maybe we should do an issue such as this.

But I do agree working with Susie Caplowe on an issue would be great.

The April Executive meeting sounds good to me, the fourth Wenesday in April (4-27-05) Of course that is the day after the last day of session...you might see if she can come to our just rescheduled March Exec. meeting March 28, 2005 at 7PM

UPDATE: Susie Caplowe will be at our meeting on Monday March 28th at 6PM as stated on the main message page...I hope that many of you can swing by.

Are there any other ideas for advocacy during session or for other ways that we can promote conservation?

I'd like to see a focus on some pro-choice issues, especially the proposed $4 million dollars of state money to be used to set up a state-wide hotline to counsel women against abortion, instead of conseling them on their options. Also, the building of a "Pregnancy Crisis Center" next to the FSU campus - which is a complete sham of a medical facility that parades as a women's clinic but offers no true pre-natal or health care other then to promote a pro-life agenda. These "centers" are financied by the religous right and threaten truly beneficial organizations like Planned Parenthood.
