Leon DEC Elects New Chair

In a close vote of 59 to 66, Rick Minor has been elected Leon County Democratic Executive Committee Chair. There should be a newspaper article in today's Tallahassee Democrat.

Congratulations to Rick Minor. We look forward to working with both him and Jon Ausman, who remains the Leon County State Committeeman and a DNC Member, to better the local Democratic Party.

Here is the text from one of Rick's Earlier emails, regarding his first 60 days in office:

Our First 60 Days Together

As Leon County Democrats, we have an opportunity to take charge of
our future. Our election for a new Chair could determine the
direction of the county party for years to come. As such, it is
essential for the membership to understand each candidate's plan for
leading our party to success. This document provides a few of the
ideas proposed by Rick Minor for the Leon County DEC during its
first 60 days with him as Chair.

1. Increasing Our Membership Together!

a. Create a competition for recruiting precinct captains - The
Graham Team vs. the Chiles Team!: Not everyone enjoys the
recruitment of new precinct captains, even though it's one of our
most important jobs. We can invigorate our recruiting efforts by
fostering a `friendly competition' within our DEC. Two teams – a
Graham Team and a Chiles Team, for example – could be formed and
would compete against each other in a spirited race to fill Leon
County's open precinct slots. Each month, the teams would report to
the DEC on their progress. Once every precinct is filled, the
winning team is presented with an award and/or is recognized at a
Florida Democratic Party annual event.

Such a simple yet innovative idea is exactly what we need to
reinvigorate the DEC, generate positive press coverage and expand
our membership.

b. Conduct Member Talent Meetings: Too often, Democrats
indicate an interest in getting involved but don't know how they can
help. These member talent meetings will describe all the
opportunities within the Leon County DEC and how Leon Democrats can
give their time and talents. With so much work to be done, there is
no reason why we can't match everyone's particular interests and
skills to the work at hand.

2. Reaching Our Fundraising Goals Together!

a. Create a Medium & Small Donor Program: We must no longer
depend solely on large donors to carry us from election to
election. With 92,000 Democrats in Leon County, we are sitting on
top of vast, untapped potential in medium and small-level
contributions. We must build a donor program that reaches out to
these voters and encourages them to donate $5, $10 or $20 a month to
the Leon County Democratic Party. This will not only expand our
financial resources, but also increase the number of Leon County
Democrats who are vested in our success. Voters who contribute
money – no matter how small the amount – are more likely to stay
involved and help us build the party.

b. Launch a Matching Funds Program to build our donor base:
This is an innovative fundraising idea that will help us double our
resources within a short time frame. Whether we need resources for
a picnic, Democratic outreach or even political slate cards, the
matching fund program will allow us to partner with large donors
while expanding our medium- and small-level donor base. Over a
designated time frame (i.e., 30-60 days), these large donors will
match our small contributions up to a specific limit. A matching
fund drive like this will have several benefits: 1) large donors
will be pleased to know we are expanding our donor base and taking
on the fundraising responsibility, 2) medium and small donors will
be doubling their contribution power and 3) our membership will be
reaching out to Leon Democrats like never before.

3. Building Our Communications Efforts Together!

a. Create a Leon County DEC Website: To take our DEC to the
next level, we need a website that can serve as a model for county
parties across the entire state. Visitors to our website should
find a calendar of Democratic events in the area, our stand on local
issues, the latest Leon DEC newsletter, and an archive and photo
gallery of our work here in Leon County. And even more important,
visitors should be drawn to areas where they can sign up to join our
team and work in the areas they find most interesting.

b. Establish a Letters to the Editor/Radio Outreach Team: We
know that Democrats have the right message, but we have to be
vocal! By creating a letters to the editor team, DEC members can
take the lead on spreading the Democratic message to readers of the
Tallahassee Democrat, Capitol Outlook, Apalachee Tortoise, FSView or
the FAMUan. Additionally, Democrats need to be heard! We can help
DEC members call into radio shows and offer the Democratic point of
view to listeners. If we don't speak out, the Republicans will
define our message for us.

c. Distribute a Monthly DEC Newsletter: To increase active
involvement, we must improve our internal communication. The
publication of a monthly newsletter will provide a summary of
important actions and a calendar of major events. This very simple
task can give interested members open insight to the operations of
the DEC and help them catch up if they miss a meeting or major
event.

Leon County Democrats have the talent and energy to make our DEC a
model for the rest of the state. With Rick Minor as the new DEC
Chair, we can implement ideas like these and create a county party
of which we can be proud.
